Jennifer M. Burgess, DO: Staying centered on why she entered medicine
December 27, 2019
On the move with: Jennifer M. Burgess, DO, a family physician in Commerce Township, Michigan.
AMA member since: 2011.
What inspired me to pursue a career in medicine: 2元彩票I initially decided on pursuing medicine when I had my adenoids removed in second grade. As I grew older, this seed that was planted as a child was nurtured and I realized that I could truly make a difference in somebody’s life. My career in family medicine allows me the opportunity to affect an entire family, from the new baby in the home through the great-grandparent who is still thriving.
How I move medicine: As a leader at Henry Ford Health System, I try to be an example to my colleagues for giving empathetic and complete care to my patients, but also to try and be at the forefront of alternative modes to practice medicine. I was the pilot for virtual care in primary care, which has become a passion of mine.
- Physician in Charge, since 2015.
- Joseph L. Ponka Caring Physician Award, 2018.
- Physician Leadership Institute Graduate, 2016.
Advice I’d give to those interested in pursuing a career in medicine: Always remember the “why” that made you pursue medicine. There will be so many challenges that you face on a daily basis and the “why” will center you to keep the passion and caring in medicine.
How my organization and I give back to the community: The Henry Ford Medical Group encourages physicians to participate in a physician giving program, which allows us to give to programs that help our employees and patients in need. In addition, the Community Health and Social Services (CHASS) Center Inc. offers care to patients in need in Detroit.
Aspect of my organization’s work that means the most: Henry Ford is focusing on physician well-being and I am a member of the committee working on this. I am passionate about preventing physician burnout and keeping the “medicine” in medicine.
My hope for the future of medicine: Henry Ford Primary Care is at the forefront of innovation. We already live with virtual care appointments and we offer behavioral health virtually at some sites. In addition, we are in the process of pursuing TytoCare, which is a home physical exam and telehealth program.
